COP15 COPENHAGEN 2009
In 2009, Denmark spearheaded the international climate change cooperation through its role as host for the fifteenth UN Climate Change Conference (COP15), at which the goal was to establish an ambitious global climate agreement for the period from 2012.
COP stands for Conference of the Parties. It is the highest body of the United Nations Climate Change Convention and consists of climate and environment ministers who meet once a year to discuss the convention’s developments.
The Convention on Climate Change sets an overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenge posed by climate change. It recognizes that the climate system is a shared resource whose stability can be affected by industrial and other emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The Convention enjoys near universal membership, with 191 countries having ratified.
The conference is a unique opportunity for Denmark to show the rest of the world what we are good at. One example: In Denmark we have managed to have economic growth of 70% over the past 25 years, while at the same time barely changing our energy consumption. This is due to things such as a focussed effort with regard to environmental technology and sustainable energy sources.
